How to Apply Press-On Nails So They Last (Step-by-Step)
Get a Salon-Perfect Application Every Time
The difference between press-on nails that last two days and press-on nails that last two weeks comes down to one thing: application. Follow this step-by-step guide and you'll get a secure, natural-looking fit that stays put — no salon appointment needed.
What You'll Need
Before you start, gather everything so you can work quickly once the glue is applied:
- Your press-on nail set (with multiple sizes)
- Nail glue (included with most sets) or adhesive tabs
- Nail file
- Buffer block
- Cuticle pusher or orange wood stick
- Rubbing alcohol or nail prep solution
- Cotton pads
Step 1: Size Your Nails First
Before doing anything else, lay out the press-ons and match each one to each finger. MoYou London's sets come with enough sizes to fit most nail widths — try each size and pick the one that covers your nail from sidewall to sidewall without overlapping onto the skin. If you're between sizes, go slightly smaller rather than larger. A nail that overhangs the edges will catch and lift much sooner.
Lay them out in order (pinkies to thumbs) so you can grab each one quickly during application.
Step 2: Push Back Your Cuticles
Use a cuticle pusher or orange wood stick to gently push back your cuticles. You don't need to cut them — just create a clean, visible nail bed. This gives the press-on a larger surface to bond to and prevents it from sitting on top of the cuticle (which causes lifting within hours).
Step 3: Buff the Surface
Lightly buff the surface of each natural nail with a buffer block. You're not trying to file them down — just remove the shine. This creates a slightly rough texture that helps the glue grip. Think of it like sanding a wall before painting: the adhesive needs something to hold onto.
Step 4: Clean and Dehydrate
This is the step most people skip — and it's the single biggest reason press-ons fall off early. Wipe each nail thoroughly with rubbing alcohol (or the prep pad included in your kit). This removes all natural oils, moisture and any dust from buffing. Do not touch your nails after this step. Even the oils from your fingertips can weaken the bond.

Step 5: Apply Glue (the Right Way)
For maximum hold, apply a thin, even layer of glue to both your natural nail AND the back of the press-on. Don't go overboard — excess glue squeezing out the sides looks messy and can actually weaken the seal. A thin, full-coverage layer on both surfaces is what you're after.
Pro tip: For the longest wear, use nail glue rather than adhesive tabs. Tabs are great for a night out or a weekend, but glue gives you that 1–2 week hold.
Step 6: Press and Hold
Place the press-on at your cuticle line at a slight angle, then press it down firmly onto the nail bed. Apply strong, even pressure for 30–60 seconds per nail. This is where patience pays off — the heat and pressure activate the glue and create the strongest possible bond.
Press from the centre outwards to push any air bubbles to the edges. Air trapped underneath is the enemy of long-lasting press-ons.
Step 7: Shape and Finish
Once all ten nails are on and the glue has set (give it a couple of minutes), use a nail file to refine the shape or shorten the length if needed. File in one direction only — not back and forth — to prevent cracking or lifting at the free edge.
Make Them Last: Top Tips
Your press-ons are on — now keep them there:
- Avoid water for the first hour. Let the glue fully cure before washing your hands, showering or doing the dishes.
- Wear gloves for housework. Prolonged soaking in water is the fastest way to loosen the bond. Rubber gloves are your press-ons' best friend.
- Don't use your nails as tools. Opening cans, peeling labels, scratching surfaces — all of these put lateral force on the bond and cause lifting.
- Apply cuticle oil around (not under) the nails. This keeps the skin looking healthy without seeping under the press-on.
What to Do If One Pops Off
It happens — especially with your dominant hand, which takes more wear. Simply clean the press-on and your natural nail, reapply a small drop of glue and press firmly for 60 seconds. That's it. No salon trip, no drama.
